A flanker in rugby union is a forward position, part of the back row in the scrum. There are two flankers in a team, typically referred to as the blindside flanker (wearing the number 6 jersey) and the openside flanker (wearing the number 7 jersey). The blindside flanker operates on the side of the scrum closest to the sideline, while the openside flanker covers the side with more open field. Their primary roles include winning possession through tackles and turnovers, supporting the ball carrier, and providing defensive coverage.
