A scrum half is a key position in rugby union, responsible for linking the forwards and the backs during play. Positioned just behind the scrum, the scrum-half is tasked with retrieving the ball from the base of the scrum, ruck, or maul and delivering it to the fly-half or other teammates. The starting scrum half will wear number 9.
In addition to distributing the ball, the scrum-half often initiates offensive plays and provides support in both attack and defense. They may also perform box kicks, which are tactical kicks aimed at gaining territory or relieving pressure.
