A winger in rugby union is a player who occupies one of the two wide positions on either side of the field, typically wearing the jersey numbers 11 or 14. The primary role of a winger is to finish attacking moves by scoring tries, using their speed and agility to exploit space on the outer edges of the opposition’s defense. Wingers are also responsible for providing support to their teammates during offensive plays and are often involved in counter-attacks following turnovers or kicks.
